Meteor Shower Why in discussion?

Recently the phenomenon of Orionids Meteor Shower is being observed.

What is Meteor Shower?

  • When the Earth passes near debris left by a comet or asteroid, the phenomenon of meteor shower is observed.
  • In this, a series of meteorites enter the Earth’s atmosphere and appear like a glowing streak.
  • This meteor shower is known for its brightness and speed and it enters the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 66 km/second. According to NASA, more than 30 such meteor shower events occur every year.
  • It is noteworthy that the point of origin of meteor showers is called Radiant.

Meteor showers are named after the constellation from which they come. The currently occurring meteor shower is related to the Orionids constellation, hence it has been named Orionoid meteor shower

The phenomenon of Orionoid meteor showers is observed every year. Apart from this, every year the phenomena of meteor showers like Perseid in August, Quadrantis in December-January, Lyrids in April, Leonids in November and Geminids in December are seen.

Why do meteor showers occur on an annual basis?

  • Like the Earth, comets also revolve around the Sun, although they do not revolve in a circular orbit like the Earth, hence they deviate from their orbit and start burning.
  • The Orionoid meteor showers can be seen from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres after midnight.
